The construction company Skanska announced Wednesday it has been awarded a $57 million contract by the city of San Diego to widen a section of El Camino Real in Del Mar and replace the aging San Dieguito River Bridge.
The El Camino Real Half Mile to Via De La Valle project will widen the heavily traveled corridor to four lanes and replace the 84-year-old bridge. Construction also will include drainage improvements, flood protection measures, and riverbank stabilization designed to reduce flooding and erosion risks.
The project will add several multimodal improvements, including separated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks and upgraded traffic signals. Additionally, an equestrian-friendly trail beneath the new bridge will connect with the planned Coast to Crest Trail.
The improvements are intended to ease traffic bottlenecks and provide a safer, more reliable connection between Del Mar, Solana Beach and surrounding communities.
"This project reflects our commitment to delivering resilient infrastructure that strengthens the communities in which we live and work," said James Bailey, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil's West Coast operations. "The replacement of the 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge and upgrading the drainage and flood protection will improve safety and traffic flow while strengthening the corridor's long-term resilience to flooding and waterway erosion."
Construction is scheduled to begin in December and is expected to be completed in August 2030.
Skanska, which has operations in the United States, Europe and the Nordic countries, reported $18.3 billion in global revenue in 2025. Its U.S. operations include 28 offices and generated $8.7 billion in revenue last year.
