A 300-megawatt battery storage project in Poway is now operational, adding another large-scale energy storage facility to the San Diego region's electric grid.
Arevon Energy Inc. announced Wednesday its Nighthawk Energy Storage Project can store up to 1,200 megawatt-hours of electricity. The project can provide enough energy to power as many as 385,000 homes for up to four hours when electricity demand is highest, the company said.
Nighthawk uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and stores electricity when demand is lower before releasing it during periods of peak demand. The technology is designed to help stabilize the grid as California adds more renewable energy and electricity demand increases.
Arevon developed, constructed, owns and operates the project under a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
The company said Nighthawk is the largest standalone battery storage project in its portfolio and is expected to generate more than $30 million in property tax revenue throughout its lifetime. The revenue is expected to support local schools, public safety, infrastructure and other community services.
More than 130 workers were employed during peak construction, according to Arevon.
"Nighthawk is critical to America's growing energy needs because it strengthens grid reliability while delivering lasting economic benefits for local communities," Arevon CEO Justin Johnson said in a statement.
The project was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local officials, business leaders and community representatives. Speakers included San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson, California Public Utilities Commission executive director Leuwam Tesfai, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Chris Cate and Poway Chamber of Commerce CEO Mike Leland.
Tesfai said the project reflects California's efforts to add energy storage to maintain reliability as the state's electric grid changes.
"Through the CPUC's integrated resource planning and mid-term reliability procurement programs, we identified the need for new energy storage to maintain reliability as the grid evolves," Tesfai said.
Anderson added the project would strengthen local infrastructure and the regional economy while providing additional electricity capacity during periods of high demand.
Arevon said it has supported organizations in Poway and throughout San Diego County, including programs involving youth, first responders, special-needs adults and climate education. Its community partners include the North County Special Needs Community Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Poway, The Ranches, Rancho Family YMCA and the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County.
Nighthawk is part of Arevon's broader portfolio of California renewable energy and storage projects. The company has more than 4 gigawatts of energy projects in operation nationwide, including several facilities in California.
The company also has the 250-megawatt Cormorant Energy Storage Project under construction in Daly City, Calif.
